The Toa of Creating

As an artist I find myself struggling with artist block from time to time. It never lasts very long but it is very frustrating.  I try to dive into the project and just work through the issues but that does not always work.  Sometimes I start a new project that has no time contstraints on it.  This allows me to free my mind and enjoy the creative process.  When I teach children to draw, I give them a piece of paper and encourage them to draw random circles or scribble on the paper. This helps to connect their brain with their hand and frees their mind of any constraints.  It is a great excersize for anyone just starting a drawing or painting project. The picture above is of a butterfly that landed on my butterfly bush this summer. The blue water was created in Photoshop with many different layers using the twirl filter.  What a fun tool.  It always feels good when you, yourself enjoy the outcome.

Jan Self Portrait

Portrait study for The Art House Co-op Project. This is the first.
I reworked a photo of myself and added a few filters here and there. I also added a photo of a butterfly for my cape. Maybe now I can fly away from winter. I need warmer weather soon.

This portrait was done in the same fashion. I feel like a 60's flower child. I might want to add some text or other elements. Maybe I need an outer-space or other world portrait. I just know I can't do anymore housework today.

My Art Dog
My dog requested a pop photo montage of herself so I had to do it. I just love it. This was a photograph of her and then I fooled around with Photoshop until I got a print over print type feel.

Pen ink and lines

I always enjoy nature. The pen and ink was created for a garden club my mother was and is still involved with. They needed a book cover for their group. I had a great deal of fun with this. I love letting line take over and just start flowing. The butterfly started as a pen and ink and was then recreated in Adobe Illustrator. I love butterflies the way the colors seem like stained glass windows. The black veins are like lead between the colored sheets of glass.

I enjoy drawing as well
as painting with watercolor.
I also enjoy following some perspective but flow and movement is important as well. I purchased the chest of drawers for $5 at a used furniture store and painted it red and installed new knobs on the drawers.
